A report published in 1928 in the book entitled Cork Insulation, by Pearl Edwin Thomas, revealed that expanded cork agglomerate withstood an immersion test in boiling water for three hours without suffering significant changes. The Navy Test, conducted by the USA Navy Department, had the aim of concentrating into a short period of time the destructive forces that a refrigeration room is subject to during its operation. Immersed and boiled for three hours at atmospheric pressure, the insulation materials being studied would have to avoid disintegration and could not expand more than 2%. The «pure cork board» (the name that distinguished it from the cork materials where filler products were applied) passed the test with flying colours. It thus proved to be an option with the clear capacity to withstand deterioration caused by humidity in cold storage environments.
The first refrigerators stored blocks of ice and in this way cool the food, had a 'corkwall" window that gave visibility to the insulation material, the expanded insulation cork. The material at sight through the window was the quality proof of the good cork and so ensuring ice would last!
Before the Titanic, the Fram was the most famous ship in the world. It was built in Norway especially for polar research and was used in three important expeditions: Fridtjof Nansen with an expedition to the Arctic Ocean between 1893-96, between 1898 to 1902 with Otto Sverdrup an expedition to the Arctic archipelago of West Greenland (currently region Nunavut, Canada) and Roald Amundsen's expedition to the South Pole and Antarctica 1910-12. The Fram is now in Musem in Bygdøynes Fram, Oslo. Before the third expedition, the ship has been improved and insulation cork was applied at various locations of the ship, for example in the cabins and decks.
During the major renovation of the White House on the Truman presidency, the Expanded Insulation Cork was used as insulation.
